Team of the Month – September

Megan Walsh – 28 points (£25,000)

Megan Walsh is the ShePlays goalkeeper of the month! Joint top scorer with Manuela Zinsberger on 28 points her cheaper £25k price tag bumps her ahead of the Arsenal number 1. The 11th ranked goalkeeper in teams selected by, maybe more managers should consider adding Walsh to their line-up. So far this season, Brighton and Walsh had 2 clean sheets versus West Ham and Birmingham City and have allowed the second lowest shots against (9). She has also recorded 8 saves so far this season, only letting 1 goal slip by in the game against Aston Villa.

Emma Koivisto – 41 points (£35,000)

The first of the Brighton duo, flying Finn Emma Koivisto has played every single minute for Brighton so far and is owned by just 3.83% of the managers. A goal in round 2 and two clean sheets to start off the season, Emma has been a big influence on the impressive Brighton defence. Her 9 aerial duels won (7th highest in the league) have helped her rack up 12 defensive points over the first three rounds which is the joint second highest in the league.

Alex Greenwood – 45 points (£45,000)

While Manchester City’s season might have started off a bit rocky, defender Alex Greenwood has rewarded her 461 managers massively. Her 21 attacking points in the first three rounds is the highest in the league, making up for her low defensive numbers. With City missing a lot of key attackers, Greenwood’s ability to make progressive passes and carry the ball into the final third will only add to her impressive 4.64 shot creating actions per 90 mins. Priced at £45k, Greenwood’s managers will hopefully benefit as the season progresses due to the fact that City’s lack of European football to worry about.
-Yashodhan

Ashleigh Neville – 41 points (£30,000)

The only defender in this team of the month without any points for goals or assists, Ashleigh Neville has helped Spurs to a perfect start to the season. With three wins out of three, Spurs also hold the joint best defensive record in the league with just 1 goal conceded. Neville, priced at £30k stands first in the league for defensive points, 6 more than any other player thanks to her 28 tackles+interceptions and 16 clearances in just three games. Surprisingly, only 4.27% of managers have her in their teams.

Victoria Williams – 41 points (£20,000)

Brighton’s Victoria Williams priced at just £20k is proving to be an excellent buy this season. Also scoring in Round 2 along with Koivisto, Williams has provided identical points to her younger partner in defence. Her 8 tackles (joint-second most) and 90% aerial duels won means she’s also tied for second place in terms of defensive points. Her high returns make her the best value for money player with 2.05 points per £1,000

Katie Zelem – 31 points (£40,000)

Katie Zelem has played every single minute of Manchester United’s season so far, and with the ability to return 6 points from a game where they were thrashed by Chelsea, she looks to be an excellent long-term option. This is reinforced by the fact that she is yet to score and is still the fourth-highest scoring midfielder in ShePlays, one point behind Kim Little. However, the Arsenal player’s £70k price tag makes Zelem a significantly better-value option. With 10 Attack points so far, Zelem is joint-third in the WSL for carries into the final third and is United’s designated corner kick taker. As of GW3, 14.5% of managers have her in their team.

Inessa Kaagman – 39 points (£30,000)

Inessa Kaagman’s storming start to the season faltered with a 4-pointer against Aston Villa, but that did nothing to topple her from the top spot for midfielders. A penalty apiece in the first two game weeks was complimented by a total of 14 Attack points; she ranks fifth-highest in the league for both expected goals (xG) and crosses. With her £30k price tag, it’s no wonder that she is the third-most-owned player in ShePlays. Kaagman only has 1 Defence point so far, but this is perhaps testament to Brighton’s strong attacking performances; this may change after Saturday’s game away to Chelsea.

Sarah Mayling – 33 points (£25,000)

In a mere 7.5% of teams, Sarah Mayling has flown under the radar for most managers, reflecting Aston Villa’s quietly impressive start to the season. A goal in the opener against Leicester helped inflate her GW1 total to 17, but what really stands out is the consistency of her Attack and Defence points, at 11 and 9 respectively.  Not only is she third in the league for crosses and joint-fourth for progressive passes, but she has also won the joint-second most tackles. Mayling is arguably Villa’s most crucial player, taking the majority of their corners and having the fourth-most touches out of any WSL player. When Villa win their games, Mayling is guaranteed to generate a substantial return in ShePlays.

Beth Mead – 55 points (£60,000)

Beth Mead has been a woman on a mission. Starting the season on a flyer, she is currently jointly leading in assists (3) alongside Ella Toone. On top of that, she has 3 goals including a brace against Chelsea. At 55 points and £20k lower than her fellow forwards on this list, Mead offers the most value for money. Currently selected by 16% of teams, she may soon justify more selection if she continues her superb passing form, her ability to pick out dazzling lofted through balls and early crosses effectively utilised under new coach Eidevall, who prefers high-intensity pressing and fast-paced countering.

Vivianne Miedema – 55 points (£80,000)

Not so surprisingly, Vivianne Miedema is our most-selected player, featuring in 60% of all teams and over 20% higher than her closest competition. Despite Arsenal’s challenging opening fixtures, she has had a fine start to the season, opening the tally against both rivals Chelsea and Manchester City. Miedema has notched up 4 goals and 2 assists so far this season. At 55 points, she sits one point behind joint WSL top scorer Sam Kerr. Under new coach Eidevall, it is expected that Miedema will play in a more advanced striker role. Could this lead to the ever-present Dutch machine putting up even more effective numbers? Only time can tell.

Sam Kerr – 56 points (£80,000)

Leading ShePlays WSL scorer from last season, Sam Kerr continues to rack up the points early in the season. With a whopping 56 points, Kerr has scored 4 goals and assisted 1. The Aussie leads the league in many categories: shots (14), shots on target (8), SoT% over 10 shots (57%), and xG (3.7). If xG isn’t your cup of tea essentially, she is scoring more than she statistically should! What leading all these stats means in ShePlays terms, Kerr is second-equal in Attack points with 17. Perhaps under selected by only 27% of teams, maybe this half of Kerr-by deserves a bit more love from the managers.
