After big moves last off-season and an incredible run in 2022, Kansas City is not taking this off-season lightly. The Current signed former Chicago midfield duo Vanessa DiBernardo and Morgan Gautrat each to two-year extensions courtesy of free agency. They’ve also re-signed Defender Hailie Mace through 2025 and Defender Kate Del Fava through 2024.
Roster Moves
Addie McCain was waived by mutual agreement and later picked up by the Chicago Red Stars.
Defender Alex Loera signed a new three-year deal to keep her in Kansas City after a breakthrough rookie season.
Sam Mewis was re-signed to a new contract after the club bought out her previous contract, which was shared alongside the announcement that she was expected to miss the 2023 season in its entirety following a second knee surgery.
Going International
Swedish Forward Mimmi Larsson signed a two-year deal with KC in late December, putting her in teal through 2024.
Brazilian Midfielder Debinha was the signing heard around the world as whether she’d leave the NWSL and head to Europe was hotly debated. Debinha signed a contract through 2024, with an option for 2025.
Free agent and Canadian Midfielder Desiree Scott signed a one-year deal to keep her in Kansas City.
Swedish Defender Hanna Glas was signed through 2024 in early February.
Trades
Forward Elyse Bennett was traded to OL Reign along with the 23rd pick of the 2023 NWSL Draft in exchange for $150,000 in allocation money.
Draft Day
Kansas City started the 2023 NWSL Draft off with a bang, acquiring the second pick overall from NJNY Gotham FC in exchange for Lynn Williams. This pick was then used to select Striker Michelle Cooper out of Duke.
The Current had eight draft picks, numbers 2, 10, 15, 18, 35, 38, 42, and 47. These picks were used to select Cooper, Winger Alexa Spaanstra out of the University of Virginia, Defender and Midfielder Gabby Robinson out of West Virginia University, Goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz out of Gonzaga, Centerback Mykiaa Minniss out of Washington State, Centerback Ella Shamburger out of Vanderbilt, Attacking Midfielder Rylan Childers out of the University of Kansas, and Goalkeeper Ashley Orkus out of Ole Miss.
Of the draftees, Cooper, Spaanstra, Robinson, Silkowitz, and Childers start the NWSL season under contract with Kansas City.
