In this weekend’s battle of two cities, the glory and misery was shared. League leaders Arsenal managed to salvage a point at home to Manchester United in a 1-1 draw, leaving the door open for Chelsea to edge closer to them in the table. An opportunity that the London blues didn’t squander as they fought for all three points in a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

Chelsea dominated the ball early on with their efforts being rewarded in the 14th minute. Jess Carter’s whipped ball from outside the box was met by Guro Reiten, rising highest and glancing the ball into the far corner past a diving Ellie Roebuck.

Emma Hayes’ side continued to press on for the elusive second goal but were unable to convert any of the chances that came their way.

City created opportunities of their own, Alex Greenwood’s crosses provided some creative sparks but the Chelsea defence especially goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger were up to the task and nullified any threat each time.

Crosses continued to be launched into the Chelsea box, late on Berger punched clearance fell at the feet of Lauren Hemp who’s goal bound strike was diverted wide by the head of Millie Bright.

Hayes’ team stayed strong to the final whistle ultimately ending City’s eight match unbeaten run. Despite the games lack of goals, its overall importance to the league’s standings can’t be overlooked. Chelsea’s win puts them within two points of the Gunners with a game in hand whilst City’s loss drops them down to sixth. Next week could see a new league leader when Arsenal travel to Kingsmeadow to face Chelsea.
