Canada failed to capitalise and cement the Arnold Clark Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain.
A strike from Alexia Putellas separated the two sides as the Spanish held on hope of winning the competition. They now need to hope Germany defeat England in the later fixture at Molineux.
In an end-to-end fixture, Canada threatened early as Jessie Fleming and Jordyn Huitema both sent efforts on to the crossbar.
Spain’s counter-attacking style caused problems for Canada and through this Putellas opened the scoring. Her side footed effort in the first half secured the three points.
The second half was another even affair as Spain started the stronger. They hit the woodwork through a close-range header before Canada looked to up the ante.
A series of crosses evaded the Canadian attackers as they pushed for an equaliser.
Attention turned to the low crowd numbers with less than 900 fans at Wolverhampton’s Molineux to see the reigning Olympic Champions take on one of the favourites for this summer’s European Championships.
England now have the chance to secure the trophy if they beat Germany by two goals to avoid a complicated affair to crown champions.
