The Paris Olympic Games will feature a 12-team women’s football tournament, with three groups of four teams. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, along with the two best third-place teams on points earned from group play.
Who is in Group B at the Paris Olympics?
Group B features the United States, Zambia, Germany, and Australia.
Germany and the United States are two of only three teams who have won a gold medal at the Olympics and a Women’s World Cup title (the third being Norway, who did not qualify for the Paris 2024 games). Australia enters their fifth Olympic tournament after their best-ever fourth-place finishes at the Tokyo 2020 games and 2023 Women’s World Cup. The last to officially join the group, Zambia beat Morocco in the 2024 CAF Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament in April to secure the final spot in Group B, qualifying for their second-ever Olympic tournament.
Each team in Group B enters the Olympic tournament with something to prove coming out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Shocking early exits for Germany, who didn’t make it out of the group stage, and the United States, who lost in the Round of 16, will have both teams hoping to re-establish their reputations as the world’s best.
After making it to their first world championship semifinal in Tokyo and losing to Sweden, then losing to the US in the bronze-medal match, Australia once again fell just short of their first medal in 2023, falling to Sweden in the Women’s World Cup third-place match after a loss to England in the semifinal. Year after year, Australia poses a more and more serious threat at international tournaments as they strive to build a legendary legacy of their own.
Zambia have emerged as contenders on the world stage after qualifying for their first world championship events, debuting at the Tokyo Olympics and making their first Women’s World Cup appearance in 2023. The team didn’t make it out of the group stage at either tournament, and will have their work cut out for them with Group B if they’re to advance to the knockout rounds at the Paris Olympics.
